Production in Construction Down by 0.5% in Both Euro Area and EU28

The FINANCIAL -- In August 2018 compared with July 2018, seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector decreased by 0.5% in both the euro area (EA19) and EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

In July 2018, production in construction fell by 0.1% in the euro area and remained stable in the EU28.

In August 2018 compared with August 2017, production in construction increased by 2.5% in the euro area and by 2.3% in the EU28.

Monthly comparison by construction sector and by Member State

In the euro area in August 2018, compared with July 2018, building construction fell by 0.3% and civil engineering by 1.1%. In the EU28, building construction fell by 0.5% and civil engineering by 0.7%. Among Member States for which data are available, the largest decreases in production in construction were recorded in Sweden (-2.4%), Germany (-1.8%) and Belgium (-0.9%). The highest increases were observed in Slovenia (+2.8%), Slovakia (+2.5%) and Hungary (+1.9%).

Annual comparison by construction sector and by Member State

In the euro area in August 2018, compared with August 2017, building construction rose by 2.5% and civil engineering by 2.4%. In the EU28, building construction rose by 1.6% and civil engineering by 4.0%. Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were recorded in Slovenia (+33.5%), Hungary (+24.3%) and Poland (+19.2%). Decreases were observed in Romania
(-10.3%), Sweden (-1.6%), Bulgaria and Spain (both -1.2%).
